Kieran Maguire: New Newcastle United reveal has 'huge potential' - 'this will be very popular'

There is “huge potential” for Newcastle United to become one of the biggest names in football in Saudi Arabia.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Magpies’ plan to boost their profile in their owners’ homeland.

A source told Football Insider in November the club had plans to roll out an Arabic-language social media handle with a view to capitalising on growing interest in the region.

Newcastle announced the launch of @NUFC_AR, a Twitter account for the club’s followers in the Arab world, last Sunday (4 December) and it has since amassed nearly 30,000 followers.

CEO Darren Eales has explained that the Tynesiders plan to take full advantage of their links to the Middle East and Eddie Howe’s side are currently on a second mid-season trip to the Gulf state in as many seasons.

Maguire insists that the latest move to reach out to supporters in the Arab world will prove “very popular.”

“With a population of over 35m people, Saudi Arabia offers huge potential in terms of building up the fanbase,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“This can be monetised. This could be in the form of a Newcastle United TV platform in Arabic. That would prove to be very popular.

‘”If you rolled that out on a subscription basis, it’s easy to see how monies would increase off the back of that approach.

“They are very much dipping their toe in the water here by gauging and increasing the level of interest.

“They are also trying to build strong communication links between the north east of England and the Middle East.”
