Newcastle United star Joelinton reaches ‘agreement in principle’ over deal – sources

Joelinton has reached an “agreement in principle” over a new contract at Newcastle United, sources have told Football Insider.

It is believed that the final details of the agreement are being ironed out and Joelinton, 27, is expected to extend his stay at St James’ Park.

Well-placed sources have also told Football Insider that an official announcement from the Magpies is expected soon.

The Brazilian has just 15 months left on his current deal after he penned a six-year contract when he joined for a reported £40million from Hoffenheim in 2019.

Joelinton set to commit long-term future to Newcastle United

Newcastle were expected to listen to offers for the striker-turned-midfielder this summer if they could not tie him down to fresh terms.

However, he looks set to stay on Tyneside after becoming an important member of Eddie Howe’s squad.

Injuries have hampered Joelinton’s season and he remains out with the groin injury he sustained in Newcastle’s FA Cup win against rivals Sunderland back in January.

He successfully underwent surgery two weeks later and the club confirmed he should be back in action next month.

After his widely criticised opening seasons at the club, Howe successfully converted Joelinton into a midfielder, where he has played exceptionally since midway through the 2021-22 season.

His performances even bagged him Newcastle’s Player of the Season that year.

Across 180 appearances in all competitions for the Magpies, he has scored 25 goals and provided 15 assists.

Newcastle sit eighth in the Premier League table after their 1-0 away win against Fulham on Saturday (6 April).

They are next in action at St James’ Park against Tottenham on Saturday afternoon (13 April).
