Newcastle United star ruled out for three more months

Newcastle United sporting director Paul Mitchell has confirmed Sven Botman is set to return to action before the new year but won’t play before December.

The 24-year-old centre-back has been out since March after tearing his ACL in Newcastle’s FA Cup tie against Man City.

Newcastle had been desperate to sign Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi after an impressive Euro 2024 campaign with England but failed to meet the club’s £70million valuation.

Palace had rejected four bids from Eddie Howe’s side for the centre-back but co-owner Steve Parish has admitted he ‘wants to sell’ to Newcastle.

Football Insider revealed (September 4) that a move could still be possible with Newcastle still keen on Guehi.

Botman has made 66 appearances, 61 of which were starts, across all competitions since making the move from French club Lille in 2022.

The Netherlands international wasn’t the only Newcastle defender to suffer a severe injury—Jamaal Lascelles also tore his ACL just 17 minutes into their Premier League match against West Ham, right after Botman’s injury in the previous game.

Speaking to the club’s media team, Mitchell said, “Sven comes back in December, another massive impact of quality.”

Howe’s side remain unbeaten in the Premier League after their first three games, with victories over Southampton and Spurs, and a draw against Bournemouth.
