Newcastle United: Stats show why Eddie Howe is making the correct Fabian Schar decision
Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar is set to be offered a new contract by the club as he approaches the end of his current deal.
Eddie Howe is approaching a huge summer window that he must get right to prove that he has the tools to lead Newcastle forward for the years to come.
He has a decision to make on Schar’s future as he approaches the end of his Newcastle contract after eight years at the club.
He has been an important part of their rise under Howe and is one of their longest-serving current players, but has found game time harder to come by recently due to injury issues and new centre-back arrivals.
Handing the 34-year-old fresh terms would not have a huge impact on Newcastle’s finances, and they are right to want to tie him down to a new deal this summer.

Schar last played in early January as he failed to recover in time to play towards the end of the season after suffering a serious ankle injury.
According to a new report from the Chronicle, the Magpies have offered the former Switzerland international a new contract and hope to announce an extension later on this week.
| Appearances | 16 |
| Minutes played | 1091′ |
| Accurate long balls per 90 | 5.86 |
| Duels won per 90 | 5.44 |
| Aerial duels won per 90 | 3.79 |
| Defensive contributions per 90 | 9.49 |
| Goals conceded while on pitch | 13 |
Many fans and neutrals alike may be confused at their move to keep him around, considering his lack of impact in 2025-26, but his statistics paint the picture of a veteran star who still has the quality to compete at the top level.
He ranked highly for several key stats when compared to other PL centre-backs last term, and had a better clean sheet and goals conceded while on pitch per 90 ratio than any other Newcastle player.
His leadership qualities will also be a key reason why he has been offered a new deal, especially after the departures of Kieran Trippier and Emil Krafth, with over 250 appearances for the club and 86 caps for his country to his name.
Schar has also made it clear that he wants to stay at St James’ Park and feels “at home” at the club, which is more than can be said for a few of their stars who have been in a rush to leave in recent times.
What has Howe said about Schar’s contract situation?
An agreement between all parties for Schar to continue on Tyneside for at least another season now seems close, which Howe will undoubtedly be pleased about.
Sources have previously revealed to Football Insider that Howe wanted Schar to sign a new deal, and he admitted as much after their final day clash against Fulham last month.
When asked about Schar’s situation, he said: “I’ve had a few discussions with Fabby. It is now with Ross Wilson and his agent and we hope to come to a successful conclusion.
“We want Fabian to stay. We feel he has a lot to offer. He’s been unbelievable for us. Fingers crossed, we want Fabian to stay. He has got a lot to offer and we have missed him.
“We have missed his distribution and missed his passing from deep has been a big miss for us, the way it accelerates our attacks.
“We would not be keeping anybody that we didn’t feel could help the team. I think Fabian has been unbelievable for us. I still feel he has a lot to offer.”
