Finance guru tips Newcastle United and Chelsea to enter ‘power battle’ as £175m deal agreed

Newcastle United and Chelsea could join Man City and Liverpool in getting a foothold in the Brazilian club ownership racket.

That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about City Football Group’s purchase of second-tier Brazilian side Bahia.

As relayed by Sports Pro on Tuesday (27 September), the multi-club umbrella organisation that owns Man City is set to make Bahia the 12th club in their portfolio in a £175million deal.

Liverpool and Chelsea’s ownership groups have also been linked with an acquisition in the region.

Newcastle meanwhile, who have two Brazilian stars on the books in Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes, are concentrating their recruitment firepower on South America, according to The i in September.

Plumley suggests that their Saudi owners could go one step further and rival City, Liverpool and Chelsea by taking over a club in Brazil.

“In terms of a soft power battle, I think this is where we are headed with multi-club ownership generally,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“There are only so many countries around the world that you can target as viable investment opportunities, so it makes sense that different clubs are fishing in the same pond.

“We might see Chelsea and Newcastle in there in the future as well.

“In relative terms, football is quite a small world in that regard. Clubs are going to target the same regions.

“City are at the forefront of this and have a first-mover advantage because of the profile of their multi-club model.”
