Newcastle United told to complete Nicolo Zaniolo signing after news from Italy - pundit
Noel Whelan has backed Newcastle to please their fans again by following the signing of Bruno Guimaraes with future midfield star Nicolo Zaniolo.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Magpies’ recruitment has been “absolutely spot on” since their Saudi-backed takeover in late 2021.
According to Gazetta dello Sport (12 June), Newcastle, Juventus, and AC Milan are all monitoring Roma star Zaniolo after his triumphant return from injury in the 2021-22 campaign.
The report claims the interested trio are looking to take advantage of the midfielder’s contract situation – with his current deal in the Italian capital set to expire in June 2024.
The Italy international notched eight goals and nine assists across 42 appearances for the inaugural winners of the Europa Conference League during the 2021-22 season.
Whelan hailed the Magpies’ “realistic” recruitment approach under new director of football Dan Ashworth.

“They’ve been realistic in going for these sorts of targets,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.
“They know the top players are wanting to play in the Champions League, so they’re buying for the future and bringing players in who are going to make a real difference.
“Players like Zaniolo [and Guimaraes] are attractive too. They’re signings which will make the fans say ‘yes’.
“This is a really good way of going about it. They’re adding so much competition and quality through the door, and you have to say that they’ve got the blueprint absolutely spot on.”
Newcastle have already completed the permanent addition of left-back Matt Targett this summer.
The Magpies finished 11th in the Premier League in the 2021-22 campaign after pulling clear of relegation danger.
