Newcastle told to land four January signings after source's Howe reveal - pundit

Newcastle United must sign a centre-back, left-back, centre-midfielder and right-winger in January if they are to stay up this season.

That is the view of ex-Aston Villa and England attacker Gabby Agbonlahor, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after Eddie Howe was unveiled as the new Newcastle boss.

He has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract with the newly-rich relegation-threatened side.

A Newcastle source told Football Insider (November 11) the new boss has already set his sights on a triple transfer swoop in January.

Howe‘s priority is to recruit two centre-backs and a central midfielder proven at the highest level.

“He’s got every chance of keeping them in the Premier League this season,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“It’s all about what they do in January, it’s all about what players they bring in. With the squad they’ve got now, I don’ think they would stay up.

“Eddie Howe can’t perform miracles. I think he needs help in the transfer window. If he gets that, they’ve got every chance of staying up.

“They need another defender, I like Ciaran Clark, he’s consistent and strong.

“But I really think they need some more in midfield. Someone that’s got legs, that can control the game and help shield the defence.

“Also, another winger, Saint-Maxmin and Wilson are good players. They need someone else as well, coming in off that right-hand side. I don’t think Almiron is good enough, he’s not going to get you the goals.

“It’s only a few players, maybe a left-back as well.”

In other news, Howe may freeze out a Newcastle United star amid a ‘downed tools’ verdict.
