Newcastle United will do ‘whatever it takes’ in striker hunt after £30m reveal – pundit

Newcastle United will do “whatever it takes” to sign a proven Premier League goalscorer this summer.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Magpies’ transfer plans.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider (20 April) that Newcastle and Brighton are among the clubs keeping close tabs on Toney.

Either side will have to pay a huge fee to prise the 26-year-old from Brentford, who will let it be known that it will take £30m to bring them to the negotiating table.

Kenny claims a new hitman is the club’s priority this summer following Chris Wood’s failure to find regular goalscoring form since his January move.

“A striker is the big one,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Chris Wood hasn’t been doing it, just the one goal from open play since he joined.

“You can’t trust Wilson to stay fit, as good as he is. Dwight Gayle can’t get a game.

“So they need to spend the majority, or a decent chunk, of that transfer budget on a striker who is going to score 15+ goals next season.

“There aren’t too many top players around at the moment so they have to make the right decision.

“But with the money they have now, I think Newcastle will do whatever it takes to get a brilliant, proven striker.”

Toney has scored 12 goals in 28 Premier League appearances this season.

He scored on his return to Newcastle in 20 November’s 3-3 draw at St James’ Park.
