Newcastle United will sign 'top striker' amid Callum Wilson swipe - Agbonlahor

Gabby Agbonlahor has tipped Newcastle United to sign a “top striker” this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker claimed Eddie Howe cannot rely on Callum Wilson to be his firt-choice striker as he is too injury prone.

The 30-year-old made his first appearance of 2022 in the 5-0 defeat to Man City last weekend (8 May) after suffering a calf injury at the end of December.

As quoted by club media on Thursday (12 May), Howe revealed he is now pushing to start when his side face Arsenal on Monday (16 May).

Newcastle signed Chris Wood in January to replace Wilson but he has only scored twice in 16 top-flight games.

“I think they will bring in another striker,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“They will keep Callum Wilson and Chris Wood and just have three strikers.

“Because Callum Wilson gets a lot of injuries, they will want Chris Wood as back up. Dwight Gayle will leave I can imagine.

“They will go out and buy a top striker. Wilson is a very good striker but is very injury prone, it doesn’t take a lot for him to get an injury so Newcastle will not rely on him.”

Wilson has played 44 times for Newcastle since he moved from AFC Bournemouth in the summer of 2020 and has scored 18 times.

The four-time England international is under contract at St. James’ Park until the summer of 2024.
