Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali react to ‘brave’ Dan Burn message
Newcastle United defender Dan Burn has gained the support of his team mates as the club continue their pre-season preparations.
The Toon enjoyed a successful 2024/25 season by lifting the League Cup trophy and qualifying for the Champions League via fifth placed Premier League finish.
Guimaraes and Tonali have been a key part of that success from midfield, with both players appearing over 40 times for the club last season.
Manager Eddie Howe is now looking to strengthen his squad ahead of their Champions League return and has already secured the £55million signing of Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga.

Team mates support ‘brave’ Burn
Dan Burn took to Instagram to post a video of himself enjoying some down time away from pre-season training.
The video was captioned: “Brave Dan Burn,” as he filmed himself riding a rollercoaster, which was liked by team mates Guimaraes and Tonali.
The 33-year-old started his career in the youth system at Newcastle before rejoining the club in 2022 following a journey through the football pyramid.
Burn is now a key part of Howe’s defence and has earned himself call-ups into the England squad.
Midfield not a concern as Howe looks to strengthen
Football Insider Verdict
Guimaraes and Tonali, along with Joelinton and Willock, form one of the Premier League’s strongest midfield partnerships.
Tonali’s return from a lengthy ban last season rejuvenated the Toon’s midfield, whose work ethic and energy often overpower other teams.
Player | Guimaraes | Tonali |
Appearances | 47 | 45 |
Goals | 5 | 6 |
Assists | 8 | 3 |
Midfield is one area of Eddie Howe’s squad he does not urgently need to strengthen, but the expected departure of Sean Longstaff means there may be another arrival.
Howe though will be prioritising other areas of the pitch like his ageing defence or finding a back-up for Alexander Isak.
Callum Wilson’s departure means 21-year-old William Osula is the club’s only senior striker to support the Swede, who could still leave the club this summer.
Centre back Giorgio Scalvini is Howe’s ‘dream’ signing should the club be able to agree a fee with Atalanta.
Goalkeeper is another position Howe wants to strengthen if he can find a compromise with Burnley for James Trafford.
PSR is not a major concern for the Toon in this window, but the club will be mindful that they need to sell to balance out their spending with departures however incomings is all that is being focused on right now.
