Newcastle vs Sunderland: Three things Sky Sports cameras missed, including away fan incident

Newcastle United lost 2-1 to Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby at St James’ Park on Sunday, after Brian Brobbey scored in the final seconds.

The striker finished at the second time of asking after he was found by Enzo Le Fee to hand Sunderland a famous victory, despite having gone behind to an Anthony Gordon goal.

The winger capitalised on Luke O’Nien’s terrible pass in the opening 10 minutes to give the home side the lead, finishing well past Melker Ellborg.

The Black Cats came back into it towards the break, but would be forced to wait until mid-way through the second half for Chemsdine Talbi to bundle in the equaliser from a corner.

Malick Thiaw thought he had scored the winner late on, but his goal was ruled out for an offside offence.

Here, Football Insider outlines three things the Sky Sports cameras missed from Newcastle’s loss to Sunderland on Sunday.

Violent scenes captured before Newcastle vs Sunderland

What should have been an exciting derby day atmosphere at St James’ Park was marred by disgraceful scenes outside the stadium.

Former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett exclusively told Football Insider after the Tyne-Wear derby at the Stadium of Light that Newcastle and Sunderland would be charged for failing to control their players.

While that had been related to the actions of players, Sunday’s scenes took place away from the pitch.

Fights reportedly broke out on the streets of the stadium around St James’ Park, with the police struggling to keep both sets of supporters away from each other.

And as the Sunderland coach attempted to leave the Stadium after dropping the team off, further incidents took place.

Footage posted on social media showed Newcastle fans throwing various objects at the coach as it looked to drive away.

Newcastle fans hurry Luke O’Nien moments before mistake

O’Nien will not want to watch his mistake before the first goal back again in a hurry. The defender attempted to boot the ball long, but instead passed directly to Nick Woltemade.

The German’s block fell to Gordon, who took the ball past Omar Alderete and finished well.

But the cameras were focused on a replay in the moments leading up to the mistake, with only the sound of the Newcastle fans an indication of what was happening.

The home fans’ outcry had been due to O’Nien’s apparent time-wasting, with the defender’s haste to take the kick and avoid a yellow card perhaps leading to his error.

Newcastle fans express their Eddie Howe support

Howe’s position as Newcastle manager has been heavily questioned at various points this season amid a disappointing season.

Many fans of the Magpies have called for him to be dismissed, although the conversation remains a highly disputed one within the fanbase.

“Throughout the first half the home fans have been chanting the name of boss Eddie Howe, for long periods,” wrote Michael Emons from the stands for BBC Sport on Sunday.

The way Newcastle came out for the second half and ultimately lost the game, however, may have quietened down some of those chants.
