Newcastle will accept ‘big’ Kieran Trippier offer – sources

Newcastle United would accept a “big” offer for Kieran Trippier in the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the Magpies are keen to raise funds to put towards their own transfer plans in the mid-season window.

This comes after former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Newcastle will look to cash in on the 34-year-old in an attempt to slash their wage bill.

Trippier is among the highest earners at Newcastle on a reported wage packet of £140,000 per week, and sources say they will entertain offers to get him off the books.

The right-back has lost his first-team place to Tino Livramento this season, and has made just six Premier League appearances and three starts as a result.

However, Eddie Howe is reluctant to weaken his squad as a result of the injury issues they have faced so far this season and it would take a “big” offer to pry him away.

Sources have also said that Howe will seek assurances that, should Trippier be sold in January, he will be given the backing to bring in a replacement.

Newcastle United to entertain Kieran Trippier offers in January

At 34 years old, there is a growing feeling that the right-back is now past his best and is no longer a part of the plans for the future of their squad.

His leadership and dressing room influence has been an important part of his place at Newcastle, but is not expected to make a difference when it comes to his departure.

There is now an acceptance that the time has come for both parties to move on with Livramento establishing himself as the first-choice right-back, while Trippier is keen to play regular football.

The right-back was linked with a move away from St James’ Park throughout the summer window, but no formal offers materialised despite interest from Saudi Pro League clubs.

Trippier’s contract at St James’ Park is set to expire in 2026, but the club are keen to make money from his sale rather than allowing him to see out his deal, so that they can reinvest in their squad.
