Nick Woltemade: German media react to Newcastle star’s display vs Ghana

Nick Woltemade took part in Germany’s 2-1 victory over Ghana on Monday with mixed success.

The Newcastle United striker was given the nod to start against the West African side, but once again failed to get on the scoresheet.

Playing in a striker’s role, the 24-year-old missed a glorious chance to put the Germans up just four minutes in, but was perhaps unlucky not to pick up a goal or an assist later in the game.

However, the German media wasn’t too impressed with the performance, describing his missed chance in the first half as “woeful”.

Below, Football Insider has examined how the media have reacted to the Newcastle star’s display.

German media left unimpressed with Nick Woltemade

At Newcastle, Woltemade is hopelessly out of form, with the striker’s transfer proving to be a blunder for Eddie Howe.

Nevertheless, there was hope that his form could recover over the course of the international break as the Magpies face a crucial set of games if they are going to qualify for Europe.

However, this has not proven to be the case, with Woltemade struggling against Switzerland before repeating this against Ghana on Monday.

As a result, he was brought off after 78 minutes, and to make matters worse, Deniz Undav, a striker who started the day on the bench, netted the winner for Germany late on.

Now, reflecting on his performance, Spox on 30 March gave Woltemade a 2.5/5 before commenting: “As expected, he was preferred to Undav following Nagelsmann’s comments. On his return to the VfB stadium, he also had the first clear chance of the game, but his attempt from a prime position ultimately went well and woefully wide (4th minute).

“It was noticeable that he frequently dropped deep behind Gnabry and acted as a target man. This was also the case for Wirtz’s offside goal, which he brilliantly set up from the offside zone.

“Shortly after the restart, the crossbar denied him the long-awaited breakthrough (53rd minute), after he had cleverly initiated the chance himself with a backheel.”

Will Woltemade stay at Newcastle United?

Ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness exclusively told Football Insider that Newcastle will have to make a decision on Woltemade’s future in the summer.

The striker is clearly not cut out to be Alexander Isak’s replacement, having only scored 11 goals in all competitions this season.

As a result, the Magpies may be tempted to cash in on the attacker in hopes of using the money to invest in someone better, with Sporting Lisbon’s Luis Suarez a recent link.

However, in remains to be seen if Newcastle would be willing to part with Woltemade so quickly and if anyone would even be interested in the striker after his failed spell in the Premier League.
