Niko Katic to Rangers: O’Rourke shares key update today
Rangers are plotting a move to re-sign Niko Katic in the January transfer window amid a defensive injury crisis, sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that Philippe Clement’s side are desperate to sign a new centre-back this month, but any deal must suit them financially.
Sources say the 28-year-old could be available on loan or for a nominal fee as he has just 18 months remaining on his current contract with FC Zurich.
Rangers have suffered numerous injuries at the back and were forced to name Clinton Nsiala, making his senior debut, alongside Robin Propper in the 1-1 draw with Dundee.
On the bench, Leon King was named as the only defensive option.
Having spent three years at Ibrox previously, Katic has plenty of experience in the SPFL which could be key, and became a fans’ favourite after a famous winning goal at Celtic Park.
As a result, O’Rourke explained that Katic “ticks a lot of boxes” for Rangers and insisted he would be prepared to hit the ground running should he return.
Rangers plot shock return for Niko Katic after new twist
Katic made 59 appearances for Rangers between his £3million arrival in 2018 and his departure in 2021, initially on loan before making the permanent move away in 2022.
Now playing for FC Zurich, he has featured 25 times across all competitions this season as his side sit sixth in the Swiss Super League with seven wins from 18 games.
Clement’s side are now scrambling for improvements on a limited budget, while they are also keen to add experience to their dressing room.
Katic’s experience in Scotland and knowledge of the club have made him an outstanding candidate.
The centre-back is still very highly thought-of at Ibrox and sources say he would welcome a return to the club should the opportunity arise.
