Mark Fotheringham has claimed that his former Notts County team-mate Callum McGregor is the best player at Celtic right now and is on par with the likes of former Hoops Shaun Maloney and Aiden McGeady.
Fotheringham, who had a spell with the Hoops as a youngster, played with McGregor at Notts County in 2014 and he isn’t surprised that the 24-year-old has went on to become an integral part of the Hoops side.
“Callum has got everything – I told you that four years ago and look at him now” he said, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.
“There’s no one better than him at Celtic just now.
“I grew up watching Aiden McGeady and Shaun Maloney develop at Celtic. Believe me, Callum’s on a par with those boys.
McGregor’s form has been so exceptional for the Bhoys that he has broke into the Scotland squad and made his debut last year against Australia.
He has been a mainstay of the side this season with 48 appearances is set to be a key man for the Hoops in the Scottish Cup semi-final v Rangers on Sunday.
Football Insider verdict
McGregor has become one of the most important players for the Hoops in recent years, but it is a bit of a stretch to claim that there is ‘no one better’ at the club, as Fotheringham has. The ability to score goals has taken McGregor’s game to a new level, and with nine goals so far this season he will be confident that he can get into double figures before the end of the season, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he got a goal in the Scottish Cup semi-final, just like he did last season, scoring the opening goal in the Hoops’ 2-0 win.
