Rangers goalkeeper Jak Alnwick has admitted he has had “no thoughts” about his future at Ibrox and insists anything suggesting otherwise is “just speculation.”
The 24-year-old has been back-up to Wes Foderingham since arriving at Ibrox 18 months ago but has found himself in the starting XI in recent weeks after a shoulder injury to former Swindon number one.
The Gers have been linked widely with a move for Hull City goalkeeper Allan McGregor, with reports claiming the veteran has been offered a two-year deal to return to Ibrox.
Alnwick claimed his only focus is giving his best before the end of the season and said “whatever happens happens” when it comes to his future.
“Everyone wants to give individual performances but collectively as a team you want to go down as a top Rangers team. No matter what is going on off the pitch,” Alnwick said, as quoted by the Evening Times.
“I have had no thoughts [about next season], it is just about this season and playing and giving my best.
“Whatever happens happens but there have been no talks or anything like that yet. It is just speculation.”
Alnwick joined the Gers from Port Vale in January 2017 but has found his first-team opportunities limited with Foderingham the undisputed number one.
The 24-year-old looks set to start Sunday’s Old Firm clash with Celtic and could hold on to the gloves for the rest of the season with Foderingham given a chance to fully recover from injury.
Football Insider verdict
Alnwick’s future at Ibrox doesn’t look as though it extends far beyond the end of the season. The former Port Vale keeper isn’t good enough to consistently push Foderingham for a starting place and is at the point of his career where he really needs regular games to continue improving. If the Gers do sign McGregor then it will be the final nail in Alnwick’s career – even if Foderingham decided the added competition is too fierce and wants to move on too. Alnwick’s signing seemed like a bit of a panic after Matt Gilks wanted to leave and it isn’t a surprise he has barely played,
