Noel Whelan has called on Marcelo Bielsa to recall Kemar Roofe and Jack Clarke to the Leeds United starting XI against Preston North End on Tuesday night.
Bielsa admitted at his media conference earlier today (Monday) that he has not selected his team as he waits for the outcome of a late fitness test for Pablo Hernandez.
The Argentine revealed that Roofe will replace Hernandez on the right side of the attack if the Spaniard misses out with the foot injury he sustained against Birmingham City on Saturday.
Former Leeds striker Whelan believes Roofe should start against Preston regardless of the fitness of Hernandez.
“We need goals, so I’d go a bit more attacking by bringing Roofe and Clarke back into the side, with possibly Tyler Roberts and Jack Harrison making way” said Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider. “Harrison had a really poor game against Birmingham and that’s one area Bielsa could look to change.
“Roofe is a fantastic player and our leading scorer, and I’d play him as the number 10, with Clarke out wide. Clarke is the most natural wide player we have, a proper winger who can glide past players.
“I would keep Bamford in the team even though he is a striker low on confidence. Roofe can drop deep and link with the other players, and he an Bamford together could create problems.”
Bielsa has avoided resting players and rotating his line-up during Leeds’ Championship campaign, with nearly all of the change a result of injuries and suspensions, with remarkably few players dropped from the side.
Harrison, 22, has made 34 appearances for United this season, including 26 league starts.
Leeds head to Deepdale third in the division with 76 points, one adrift of second-placed Sheffield United.
