Noel Whelan has claimed he is “getting a feeling” that Marcelo Bielsa’s talks with the Leeds United board will result in him remaining for another season.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-United striker claimed the Argentine is in a strong negotiating position as his “stock his high” after transforming the team during his debut campaign.
As revealed by Football Insider, the Argentine is set to make a decision on his future early next week following extensive talks with the club on whether the option to trigger a 12-month extension before 31 May should be activated.
“I think Mr Bielsa will want to stay and finish the job,” Whelan told Football Insider. “I’m getting the feeling – based on what I see and hear – he is a man who doesn’t want to leave things unfinished. He is an honest and humble man.
“Andrea Radrizzani did really well to get him in the first place, but does he have the money to invest in Mr Bielsa for another season as well as in the players, as he can’t get promotion with the same players?
“It all depends on what the club can offer Mr Bielsa. Right now, his stock is high and, when your stock is high as a manager, people and other clubs will look at him.
“He will want to see the board doing everything to make the team better for next season. How far are the club willing to go keep him for another season?”
Bielsa, 63, joined Leeds last summer and oversaw a dramatic improvement in results and performances.
United pushed strongly for automatic promotion all season before finishing third in the Championship and then narrowly losing their play-off semi-final against Derby County.
In other Leeds United news, it can be REVEALED that the club are to sell a midfielder for a “significant” fee after the Marcelo Bielsa green light.
