Norwich manager Alex Neil has warned Newcastle that his side can be “a match for them” and cited their win against the Magpies from last season as proof.

Neil’s side beat the north east club 3-2 at Carrow Road when the duo were in the Premier League last season.

Now, they are due to meet once again, this time for a Championship clash, but they have already faced each other this term.

Rafa Benitez’ men welcomed the Canaries to St James’ Park in September and found themselves 3-2 down with minutes left on the clock.

But, Newcastle managed to pull off a remarkable win when they scored two goals late into stoppage time to seal all three points.

Ahead of their mouth-watering encounter, this is what Neil had to say about his midweek opponents.

“Without doubt, we will be a match for them,” Neil told Sky Sports. “We beat them the last time they came here in the Premier League. We were 3-1 up at their place and deservedly so.

“Going into the game, we should have every belief that if we play well we can win. We know it is going to be tough because they are a really good side, but so are we and it is who plays well on the day. If we’re on our game, we can beat anyone.”

Norwich are seventh in the table on 50 points from their 31 games, 15 points behind Benitez’ side who are sitting top of the pack.

Dropped points by the away team could see second-placed Brighton, who take on Ipswich on the same day, overtake their rivals in the table with a win.

Equally, for the Canaries, three points could see them move into the top six, but results would have to go their way.

Sheffield Wednesday currently occupy sixth spot and they take on a struggling Blackburn Rovers side in front of their own supporters.

In other Newcastle news, Mo Diame and Isaac Hayden are axed in this combined XI with Norwich.
