Nottingham Forest £12m reveal gets stinging response from Kieran Maguire

The Premier League must change their financial rules to provide a level playing field after the points deduction verdict against Nottingham Forest.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that Forest had a combined squad cost of just £12million when they were promoted to the top flight.

Forest achieved promotion in 2022 after winning the play-offs and were busy during the summer transfer window trying to strengthen their squad.

Club chairman Evangelos Marinakis signed off on over 30 new signings following their promotion, which played a huge part in their breach of financial regulations.

Forest were deducted four points on Monday (18 March) after exceeding their allowable losses by £34.5milion.

Kieran Maguire calls for major rule change after Nottingham Forest squad cost revealed

Maguire believes financial rule changes are needed if newly-promoted sides are expected to go head-to-head with clubs that have squad costs of over £1billion.

It’s worth noting that when Forest were promoted to the Premier League, the total cost of their squad at the 30th of June 2022 was just £12million,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

Tottenham

Yet they’re expected to compete with clubs such as Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City, all of whom have squads costing more than £1billion.

If people want more of a level playing field, then the rules as they stand are simply not fit for purpose.”
