Nottingham Forest appeal could end in points deduction ‘disaster’ – sources

There is a “disaster” scenario where Nottingham Forest could worsen their punishment by appealing the decision of their hearing, sources have told Football Insider.

Forest were given a four-point deduction on Monday (18 March) after breaching the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.

They exceeded their allowable losses by £34.5million over a three-year period.

The initial punishment was six points for the severity of the breach which was subsequently reduced by two due to their compliance in the investigation.

Forest published a club statement after the verdict that stated they were “extremely disappointed” by the decision.

They now have one week to decide whether or not to appeal the decision.

Nottingham Forest could add to points deduction if they appeal

Everton successfully appealed their 10-point deduction in November, with a second hearing reducing the punishment down to six points.

However, sources have told Football Insider that there is the “potential for an appeal to turn into disaster”.

The appeal hearing would be heard by a separate commission who have the opportunity to vary any penalty imposed meaning Forest could end up with more points deducted.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side dropped into the relegation zone after their four-point deduction and are winless in their last four league matches.

A further points deduction – albeit unlikely – could have a huge impact on Forest’s final league position.
