Nottingham Forest could ‘move to Coventry’ in shock twist – Keith Wyness

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted it is “vital” for Nottingham Forest to remain in the city centre as uncertainty continues over a stadium deal.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested cities should be “frightened” of an American-style “franchise model” taking hold in the English game.

The BBC reported last month (8 July) that Nottingham City Council has agreed in principle to sell the land around the City Ground to Nottingham Forest – but no update has followed.

Owner Evangelos Marinakis had previously threatened to move the club out of the city to a new 50,000-seater stadium.

Forest are entering their third consecutive season in the Premier League, which starts with a home clash against Bournemouth on Saturday (17 August).

Wyness drops Nottingham Forest ‘franchise’ warning

Wyness insisted Nottingham’s council need to fight tooth and nail to keep the club in the city as it “contributes immensely to the local economy”.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It’s vital they keep the club where it is.

“The proximity to the city centre is vital. It’s a classic negotiation between a club and city council.

“The council should be careful what they wish for.

“With so many American owners coming in to the Premier League, these cities should be frightened of a franchise model coming in.

“Marinakis, I’m sure, would be one of the first to say ‘Okay, I’m moving to Coventry’.

“I’m not saying it would ever come to that, but it’s a what-if scenario.

“Forest have had one run-in with the council, but both parties should be able to work out a common-sense agreement.

“Without Forest and Notts County – it’s a huge blow. That’s the reputation of the city in many ways.

“They’re contributing immensely to the local economy in so many ways.

“There’s a whole lot that goes on around a football club. The city should be polishing that asset, rather than fighting it.

“Marinakis is not everyone’s cup of tea, but there has to be a way to find a win-win for both parties.”
