Nottingham Forest ‘highly unlikely’ to appeal points deduction – sources

Nottingham Forest are not expected to launch an appeal for their points deduction, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the Reds are “highly unlikely” to rebut their recent four-point deduction for breaching Premier League profit and sustainability rules.

Well-placed sources have told Football Insider that Forest, owned by Evangelos Marinakis, would not counter the charge as they could face a further deduction for submitting a frivolous appeal.

It was announced on Monday (18 March) that Forest would face the hefty sanction after an independent commission found they breached their allowed losses threshold of £61million by £34.5million.

Nottingham Forest to accept four-point deduction

This took their overall losses for the last three years to just over £95million.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side were initially punished with a six-point deduction but it was reduced by two points as they complied with the investigation.

Everton, who were hit with a record-breaking 10-point deduction in November, successfully appealed to have their sanction reduced by four points.

Forest’s sanction saw them drop below Luton Town and into the relegation zone on 21 points.

However, they are on track to comply with financial regulations next season, with Football Insider revealing (19 March) that their projected losses for their 2023-24 accounts are between £12million and £17million.

Nottingham Forest most recently drew 1-1 with fellow relegation fighters Luton after they bagged an 89th-minute equaliser at Kenilworth Road on Saturday (16 March).

They are next set to face Crystal Palace on 30 March after the international break.
