Nottingham Forest are in advanced talks to agree a new contract with defender Jordan Gabriel, Football Insider can reveal.

The 21-year-old is currently on loan at Scunthorpe United for the rest of the season.

A Forest source has told Football Insider that the club are close to reaching an agreement with Gabriel over a contract extension.

The new deal is set to run for two-and-a-half years until the summer of 2022.

The young Englishman has yet to play in a league game for Forest, but made his first-team debut as a late substitute in their 5-0 League Cup loss to Arsenal in September.

He has not added to his one senior appearance but has gone straight into the Scunthorpe side.

Gabriel has made four appearances for the League Two outfit, three in the starting XI in his preferred position of right-back and the other as a half-time substitute.

Forest’s decision to hand the rising star a long-term deal shows how highly they think of him, and that he is seen of capable of breaking into their first team in the future.

Gabriel signed his first professional deal at Forest as a 16-year-old.

Meanwhile, Forest are next in action on Saturday, when they travel to leaders West Brom for the 12.30pm televised clash at the Hawthorns.

Slaven Bilic’s side have opened up a six-point lead over the chasing pack, who include the Sabri Lamouchi’s team in fifth spot.
