Nottingham Forest lead race to sign midfielder with ‘phenomenal’ potential, approach made

Nottingham Forest and Leeds are reportedly in the race to sign Hibernian midfielder Josh Mulligan in January.

It has been a turbulent season for the Garibaldi after changing their managers three times already, not even reaching the halfway point of the campaign.

Nuno Espirito Santo was first sacked by Nottingham Forest after reported clashes between him and owner Evangelos Marinakis.

His replacement didn’t fare much better as successor Ange Postecoglou was axed by Nottingham Forest after just 39 days in charge, following a diabolical tenure.

The Australian has been followed up by Sean Dyche, who’s been tasked with steadying the ship, as he looks to dip into the transfer market in the upcoming window.

Josh Mulligan initial enquiries made by Nottingham Forest

The Scottish Daily Mail reported via their print edition on 9 December that both Forest and Leeds have approached Hibs with enquiries about the 23-year-old ahead of a possible January move.

The Scottish midfielder has been branded as a player with “phenomenal” potential by ex-Hibernian man Tam McManus (Ibrox News, 12 November) and has deservedly been picking up interest from the English top-flight.

It is understood that at this point, Forest’s interest is more advanced than Leeds’.

Mulligan has been an ever-present in the Hibs’ starting XI this season and it would certainly take a sizeable offer to tempt him away from Scotland, given his seismic performances this campaign.

The 23-year-old was called up to the Tartan Army’s squad in recent months, but he is still yet to make his debut for his nation, as he weighs up the possibility of a bold move to the Premier League.

Evangelos Marinakis continues focus on squad depth as more additions lined up

Given the Garibaldi’s involvement in the Europa League, it is no surprise the Greek owner is opting to bolster his squad even more to maintain unparalleled squad depth.

Forest have rapidly assumed a stronger team, with options in every position that will give Dyche a useful headache when it comes to team selection.

Landing Mulligan in January would be another point made by Marinakis of increasing the strength of the squad and an indication that they are here to win the Europa League, not merely participate.

The Garibaldi have eight points from their first five matches in Europe and will be eyeing up breaking into the top eight for automatic knockout qualification.
