Nottingham Forest need ’emergency’ action to avoid new points deduction – Wyness

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has called for an “emergency vote” this summer to ensure clubs like Nottingham Forest are not deducted more points.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted it is “not fair” to see the likes of Forest punished for investing to give themselves the best chance of remaining a Premier League club.

Football Insider revealed on Friday (10 May) that Nottingham Forest are facing another four-point deduction next season and will need to sell players to avoid a “serious” breach of financial rules.

The Midlands club are still embroiled in a relegation battle in the 2023-24 campaign after being docked four points earlier this year.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side can effectively secure survival with one win from their last two games.

Wyness urged clubs to increase the Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) threshold from £105million this summer – even with new rules set to come in 2025.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “There’s been talk about new systems coming into place for the 2025-26 season.

“But it’ll be interesting to see where we are next season.

“There has to be an emergency vote taken in the summer, with some changes coming in next season.

“Whether it’s as simple as increasing the amount of the breach from £105million, they’ve got to do it.

“Clubs have to be given the chance to invest and make sure they stay in the Premier League – providing owners aren’t loading the club up with debt.

“They have to make the league as competitive as possible.

“I don’t see why it’s fair to see Forest criticised and punished for trying their best to stay in the league.”
