Nottingham Forest news shocks Kieran Maguire as Premier League told to drop all punishments
It is ‘very surprising’ that politicians have asked the Premier League to pause all sanctions against Nottingham Forest until the independent regulator is introduced.
That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that he is “confused” by the request as the independent regulator will not intervene with individual club breaches.
Via Twitter, Nottingham MP Nadia Whittome revealed a letter sent to the Culture, Media and Sport Secretary asking for all sanctions against Forest to be paused until a regulator is introduced.
Whittome argues that the process must be “fair” given that Man City’s 115 charges remain unheard and unresolved.
The new ‘Football Governance Bill’ passed this month which promises a new independent regulator as a standalone body.
Nottingham Forest points deduction news confuses Kieran Maguire
However, Maguire explained that the new regulator will still not intervene in financial breaches when introduced so appeals from Whittome are confusing.
“I’m confused by this appeal because even when the independent regulator is created,it will not become responsible for individual breaches of rules by individual clubs,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.
“The remit is much broader to tackle heritage issues in terms of where clubs are going to play, in which competitions they’re going to play, the owners and directors’ test and also financial distribution.

“None of that covers cost control issues so Forest’s ongoing case is actually outside the remit of the independent regulator.
“So, yes, these comments were very surprising.“
