Nottingham Forest news: Wyness swipes at ‘very fiery’ Marinakis after outburst

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has suggested Nottingham Forest’s post-match refereeing outburst was a classless “knee-jerk reaction” as he swiped at “very fiery” Evangelo Marinakis.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – slammed Forest’s handling of the situation and insisted “bad decisions are part of the game”.

Nottingham Forest fell to a crucial 2-0 loss away at Everton on Sunday (21 April) and were on the wrong end of multiple controversial refereeing decisions.

The club released a statement on X just minutes after full-time, claiming they had “warned” the PGMOL that VAR official Stuart Atwell “is a Luton fan” and claimed they are “considering options” going forward.

Forest have since been granted the opportunity to privately listen to the VAR audio from the match.

Wyness slams ‘knee-jerk’ Nottingham Forest outburst – ‘they’ve got it wrong’

Meanwhile, the Premier League have launched a probe into the bitter row between the Midlands club and refereeing chiefs.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “There’s a lot to unpack in terms of the Forest response.

“I think the statement was put out five minutes after the game, which points to a bit of a knee-jerk reaction.

“I know they’ve been complaining most of the season about some bad refereeing performances, and I get that.

“Hence the Mark Clattenburg appointment. It’s been building up to this point at Forest.

“I just think the speed of the reaction has taken the class away from what they could’ve done as a club.

“Forest are blaming the referees and VAR for their poor results. When you have to issue a second and third statement, you’ve probably got the first two wrong.

“I don’t think it’s a very good way to handle the situation, but the chairman is obviously a very fiery character. I have sympathy for what has happened, but it’s just football.
