Nottingham Forest owner Marinakis has embarrassed Premier League rivals – Wyness

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has suggested Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis has put other Premier League owners to shame during his time at the club.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted there is “nothing much more you can ask” of the Greek billionaire’s ownership at the City Ground.

Nottingham Forest have been big spenders in the Premier League since returning to the top flight via the playoffs in 2022.

Marinakis has also been crucial in pushing through plans to expand the City Ground, with the BBC reporting (8 July) that Nottingham City Council has agreed in principle to sell the land to the club.

This new agreement is now set to allow Forest to expand capacity from 29,000 to 40,000 by rebuilding two stands.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side finished 17th in the table last season after being deducted four points for a breach of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

But despite that brush with the law, Wyness claimed Marinakis is a better option than the “private equity players” elsewhere in the English top flight.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I think Marinakis is what a lot of fans love.

“He’s shown his passion and his temperament, we’ve seen him fly off the handle – but he’s a great owner.

“He’s a character and he’s got the resources. He’s looking after the club, he’s doing his best for the club.

“There’s nothing much more you can ask – he’s really committed to it.

“I think there are a lot of fans on his side because he wears his heart on his sleeve.

“It’s great to see. He’s perhaps better than the private equity players we see in a lot of other clubs in the Premier League.”
