Nottingham Forest points deduction appeal to hinge on key Tottenham development – Wyness

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has suggested Nottingham Forest’s points deduction appeal will centre around Brennan Johnson’s transfer to Tottenham last summer (2023).

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the process will be complete before the end of this season – preventing an “unthinkable” scenario.

According to The Independent (15 April), Forest’s appeal against their four-point deduction for breaking Premier League financial rules will be heard in the week commencing 22 April.

Forest exceeded Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) by £34.5million more than their permitted threshold of £61million.

The Midlands club expressed their unhappiness at the punishment after it was applied last month and are seeking a reduction through the appeal process.

Johnson joined Tottenham for a reported fee of £47.5million on deadline day last summer (2023) after rejecting several early-window offers.

Forest would have needed to sell the academy product by 30 June to have any fee reflected in their 2022-23 accounts.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I think the timetable will have everything wrapped up before the end of the season.

“The appeal will centre around the Brennan Johnson transaction with Tottenham.

“I believe they will have this done before the end of the season.

“From a sporting integrity point of view, I really don’t see how you could not have a proper points tally to count on.

“It would just be unthinkable for the best league in the world, so I’m pleased that we’re trying to head this through.

“But we need to make sure they do it properly and allow due process to happen with these appeals.”
