Nottingham Forest points deduction: Kieran Maguire reveals best-case scenario from appeal

Nottingham Forest should only expect to receive one point back at most if their PSR appeal is successful.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that it was “worth a punt” for Forest to appeal their deduction because the financial benefits of staying in the Premier League are so high.

Forest were deducted four points in March after they were charged with a breach of Profit and Sustainability Rules.

They announced last week (25 March) that they have appealed the decision with a verdict expected by 24 May – five days after their final Premier League clash.

Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke has claimed that Forest’s points deduction appeal could now “make a mockery of the Premier League”.

Nottingham Forest can only expect one point back from appeal

Maguire believes Forest will gain “hope” from Everton’s success in their appeal earlier this season.

It’ll be interesting to see the strategy employed by Nottingham Forest with regards to their appeal,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

I think the most that they can expect is one point back.

They’ve seen that Everton were successful when they appealed, so perhaps this is giving them cause for hope.

In terms of the structure of their appeal, they will be pointing out that under the existing rules, it discourages clubs from trying to maximise the sales value of players.

Forest’s end of the financial year was clearly impacted upon by the sale of Brennan Johnson.

So, it’s going to be a tough one for Forest to argue but the financial rewards of staying in the Premier League are so high that it’s worth a punt.
