Nottingham Forest points deduction: O’Rourke predicts ‘disaster’ after appeal latest

The Premier League would face a “disaster” if Nottingham Forest chose to appeal their devastating four-point deduction.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke claimed that the result of an appeal would be determined after the season ends, meaning teams would not know if they are relegated when the campaign is over.

Well-placed sources have told Football Insider (21 March) that Forest are not expected to launch a rebuttal as they could face a further deduction for submitting a frivolous appeal.

Forest’s sanction saw them drop into the relegation zone after an independent commission found they breached their allowed losses threshold of £61million by £34.5million, but they still have time to launch an appeal.

Premier League face “disaster” if Nottingham Forest launch appeal

O’Rourke blasted the Premier League for seemingly “making up the rules as they go along” and was adamant that a verdict should be reached before the end of the season to avoid tarnishing the league’s credibility.

“I think Forest appealing would be a concern for the Premier League,” he told the Inside Track podcast.

“We could have relegation decided after the season is over if we go to these appeals and everything else.

“That would be a disaster for the Premier League as a product.

“It would not be a good look around the world as they want to protect their image and the integrity of the league.

“If we’re having clubs stay up on points won on the pitch when the season ends and then a week later we see changes that result in them getting relegated, it would be a mockery of the league.

“If there are appeals, they need to be heard before the end of the season because it won’t do anybody any good at all.

“The Premier League seem to be making the rules up as they go along sometimes.”
