Nottingham Forest: ‘VAR should have punished Ryan Yates after he used a weapon’

Keith Hackett believes that Nottingham Forest winger Ryan Yates could have been punished after catching Newcastle United’s Tino Livramento with an elbow during their Premier League fixture on Sunday (10 November).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-FIFA and Premier League official believes Yates “used a weapon” in this incident due to his hand being clenched.

The 26-year-old appeared to elbow Livramento but wasn’t punished for the situation, despite the Newcastle defender bleeding from his mouth in the aftermath of the collision.

The Toon Army were left raging after Yates’ display and claimed that it summed up the “horrific state” of the Premier League’s officiating at the moment as the midfielder was branded a “thug.”

Forest were defeated 3-1 by Eddie Howe’s side despite taking the lead in the first half through Murillo.

Nottingham Forest could have been down to 10 men after Ryan Yates’ elbow

Hackett told Football Insider, “The Burn incident is clearly a yellow card offence.

“It’s surprising when you consider Anthony Taylor issued 14 yellows in a match, he didn’t award one for [Yates’ elbow].

“You know, this is where we expected VAR to be used when there was suspicion of an illegal challenge of this nature.

“Looking at it closely, one of the guides you take as a referee is to look if a hand is clenched – and therefore used as a weapon – and that’s why I’m surprised by this one.

“We’re reluctant to use VAR, but in this situation, it would have been good for Taylor, looking in the other direction, to have had the view we had.”
