Nottingham Forest victims of ‘crazy’ injustice as Morgan Gibbs-White controversy analysed – Campbell

Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White should have been awarded a penalty against Brentford on Saturday (5 November).

That is the view of former Forest and Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the controversial incident in the second half of Steve Cooper’s side’s 2-2 draw with the Bees.

As shown on BBC’s Match of the Day, Gibbs-White went to ground inside the 18-yard box after trying to hurdle Ben Mee’s challenge.

Referee Andre Marriner did not deem the contact as worthy of a penalty and VAR official Lee Mason did not see fit to intervene.

As quoted by the BBC post-match, Gibbs-White claimed his side were “cheated out of three points” by the officials.

The Telegraph‘s John Percy report on 6 November that the Football Association are investigating the midfielder’s accusation that Forest were ‘cheated’.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the decision not to award Gibbs-White a penalty, Campbell said: “I thought the Morgan Gibbs-White one was a penalty.

His leg was in the air when the contact came. His leg is off the ground. He had to try and put his foot down.

For me, that is a penalty. It is crazy because Brentford got their one and Forest got neither of theirs.

I have seen the [Emmanuel] Dennis one given and the Gibbs-White one was definitely a penalty.

I do not know what a penalty is anymore.”
