‘Nottingham Forest well placed to agree Matheus Cunha deal’

Nottingham Forest are planning to strengthen their attacking options this summer after being heavily linked with Matheus Cunha.

Nuno Espirto Santo’s side enquired about the Brazil international’s availability in the January transfer window, but he remained with Wolves to help them in their relegation fight.

Forest will need to make a record-breaking bid to sign Cunha this summer as Molineux chiefs look to keep hold of their prize asset.

The 25-year-old’s contract, which runs out in 2029 following his extension in January, includes a £62.5million release clause.

That is almost double the club-record £35million fee Forest spent on signing Elliot Anderson from Newcastle United last summer.

Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider the East Midlands side can afford to sign Cunha in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Nuno’s side currently sit third in the Premier League table, with five Champions League spots expected to be on offer as England is comfortably clear in Uefa’s coefficient rankings.

Owner Evangelos Marinakis is set to green-light a Forest signing spree this summer as they look to strengthen their squad to compete in Europe.

Nottingham Forest face ‘big’ change after stunning twist

Borson insisted Forest will be faced with a “big” change next season if they qualify for the Champions League.

He told Football Insider: “For Nottingham Forest, I would think Champions League is probably worth a minimum of £75million next season in Uefa prize money.

“That’s the four games. Four home games, eight games in the league, potentially two more in the playoff.

“Then if you can win the play-off, they would potentially have a round of 16 game.

“You wouldn’t think they’d get beyond the round of 16, but even with that it’s £75million to maybe £90million.

“Then on top of that, maybe there’s some additional commercial revenue.

“I think all things being equal, they will be able to afford Cunha.

“The question will be what they need to do to their overall squad to manage a season of Champions League.

“That is going to be a big change for Nottingham Forest.”

Nottingham Forest working on ‘unbelievable’ Nuno deal

Football Insider revealed on 31 March Forest are working on an “unbelievable” Nuno deal as they are desperate to tie him down to a long-term contract.

The Portuguese manager signed a two-and-a-half-year deal after replacing Steve Cooper at the City Ground in December 2023.

The 51-year-old, who will be out of contract in June 2026, kept Forest in the Premier League last season and now has them on course to qualify for the Champions League.
