By Harry Sykes

The odds on Chris Wood joining Burnley this month have been slashed to 6/4 following a waves of bets, according to bookmakers.

Sky Bet priced the Premier League club at 6/4 on Thursday afternoon to sign Wood, 25, before the transfer window cut-off on 31 August.

Burnley are now a long way clear in the betting ahead of fellow top-flight clubs Huddersfield (14/1), West Brom, Stoke (both 18/1), Brighton and Newcastle United (both 20/1).

Sean Dyche’s side were not in the running to sign Wood at the end of May, when Stoke were 5/2 favourites to sign him, ahead of West Ham, Swansea, Southampton and West Brom.

The change in the market come after it emerged that Burnley have tabled a bid worth up to £20million fir the New Zealand international.

Wood had the best season of his career last season as he topped the second-tier scoring charts with 27 goals, and plundered 30 in all competitions.

He made the three-man shortlist for the Championship player of the season before missing out to eventual winner Anthony Knockaert of Brighton.

Like Knockaet, Wood also struggled for game time at previous club Leicester but he has made a big impact at Leeds since joining for £3million in the summer of 2015.

The forward has two years remaining on his Elland Road contract.
