Oleksandr Zinchenko could be 'surplus to requirements' as new Man City bid readied - pundit

Noel Whelan has suggested Man City could sanction the exit of Oleksandr Zinchenko if Marc Cucurella is signed from Brighton this summer.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 25-year-old Ukraine international would be “surplus to requirements” if City can strike a deal for the Seagulls star.

As reported by the Guardian (16 June), City are primed to table a bid for Cucurella, 23, over the coming days after making him their top left-back target.

Zinchenko operated on the left-hand side of defence for much of the 2021/22 campaign.

As such, Whelan suggested Cucurella’s arrival could see City green light a move away for the versatile Ukrainian.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I really like Zinchenko. Do I think he’s a full-back? No. I probably think he’s a winger. When I look at him, I think he’s better off in that forward position, in that three-quarter zone and that midfield role.

“I think when you look at the strength in depth they have in midfield and the wide areas, I think he probably could be surplus to requirements if Cucurella comes in.

“He’s your natural, wide wing-back that can play both of those roles. Zinchenko, I think defensively, he’s probably not your natural wing-back, so to speak.

“I think even Man City were going to go and try and get that one piece of the puzzle that plays box-to-box Cucurella’s your man. That does then forge an opening for Zinchenko to get more regular football at a club in Europe or in England.”

Zinchenko played 28 times during to the 2021/22 season, with 10 league starts under his belt.

He is contracted to City until 2024.
