‘Ollie Watkins update emerges as Newcastle striker search hits buffers’
Newcastle United’s search for a Callum Wilson replacement has taken a twist as a significant transfer update has developed.
Wilson’s contract expired at the end of last month and he decided against renewing terms on Tyneside.
That leaves manager Eddie Howe with only star striker Alexander Isak and youngster William Osula, who has only scored two goals for the club since his arrival from Sheffield United a year ago.
Howe therefore needs back up for Isak, and potentially a replacement if a massive offer comes in for the Swedish international with Liverpool interested in his services.

Budget constraints could lead to departures
Howe looks to have boosted his attacking options with the expected addition of Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga.
The Toon could therefore have a very dangerous front three of Anthony Gordon, Isak and Elanga next season.
Howe though wants to add depth to his squad and have the ability to rotate his forwards with Champions League football next season adding to an already congested fixture list.
The Chronicle report that there has “been a bit of talk about Ollie Watkins” but the deal could “be a hard one to do unless we [Newcastle] see departures.”
29-year-old Watkins was Villa’s top goal scorer last season and has been linked with a move away from the club amid their PSR worries.

Perfect Watkins is what Toon desire
Football Insider Verdict
Newcastle look forced into selling players again this summer if they want to continue spending big on new arrivals.
Howe needs a back up for Isak, in case of injury or an offer they can’t refuse arrives.
Watkins would be an ideal striker for both possible scenarios, his impressive goal scoring record at Villa showing he knows how to find the back of the net.

The England international also has Champions League experience which would be a massive upside for Howe.
Howe has been warned though that departures may be required and it remains to be seen who will leave the club this summer.
Winger Harvey Barnes could be a player to leave now the club have sorted a deal for Elanga.
Nick Pope is expected to stay, but if a deal can be agreed with Burnley for James Trafford, the 33-year-old may be a player the club can afford to lose.
Their ageing back line could also see departures with Howe’s ‘dream’ signing Atalanta centre-back Giorgio Scalvini.
