‘Only thing we’re missing’ – John Terry urges Chelsea to secure Alexander Isak-esque signing
John Terry believes Chelsea are just a couple of signings away from competing for the Premier League title again.
The Blues have not lifted the Premier League title since the 2016-17 season, but Enzo Maresca has earned the trust of the supporters after lifting the Europa Conference League and Club World Cup trophies.
However, with Liverpool signing Alexander Isak from Newcastle United and Viktor Gyokeres arriving at Arsenal, top clubs around the Blues have also strengthened ahead of an exciting title race.
After three matches, Maresca’s side are second in the league standings, just two points behind the Reds, and those points could be squashed if Chelsea make a statement signing during the winter transfer window.
John Terry backs Chelsea to secure marquee signings
Terry has been massively complimentary of the Blues manager, but if the club are to win their seventh Premier League title, it is believed that they need to emulate Liverpool‘s transfer business.
“The biggest thing for managers in the last couple of years has been to be really close to the players, and he appears to have a really good connection with the younger players as well,” he said on talkSPORT (11 September).
“He’s very young himself, he understands the players, he understands what they want, and he’s certainly getting the most out of them at the moment.
“I do think, as a football club, listen, I’m not sure Isak’s coming to Chelsea, but I’d love to see us in the mix for those types of signings if we want to be back to our very, very best, at the top, winning Premier League titles year after year.
“I think that’s the only thing we’re missing at the moment, those marquee signings.”
Which strikers recorded similar stats to Alexander Isak last season?
In 42 appearances across all competitions, Isak notched 27 goals and six assists, adding to his 35 goals and four assists from the previous two campaigns at St James’ Park.
Multiple names come to mind who struck similar figures, including Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe, Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane, Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski, and Man City‘s Erling Haaland.
Kane has been linked with a Premier League return, and the Blues cannot be completely ruled out as a destination, though many would believe that a Spurs reunion is most likely.
Chelsea need a big name of their own to link up with superstar Cole Palmer, but after the signings of Joao Pedro and Liam Delap, it could be some time until those deals are struck at Stamford Bridge.
