Patterson is ‘ready to leave’ Rangers and follow Gerrard to Aston Villa – pundit

Frank McAvennie has warned Nathan Patterson could follow Steven Gerrard to Aston Villa amid a lack of game time at Rangers.

The former Villains hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insists the defender would jump at the move.

Patterson, 20, now has six Scotland caps but is struggling for game time at Ibrox as club captain James Tavernier sits ahead of him in the pecking order.

Aston Villa

He only has six club appearances to his name this season after breaking onto the scene during the 2020-21 campaign.

90Min have claimed Villa will join the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich in the race for the right-back.

McAvennie admits he can see Gerrard returning for his former player if Patterson make it clear he wants to leave Ibrox.

“I could see Mr Gerrard coming back for Patterson,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“This boy is a talent and he is going to be a big player in the future. But the papers have been saying he might wantaway because of not playing.

“Gerrard knows that and Gerrard has said as much in the past. He knows you can’t bench a full international.

“I suspect he will be glad to be far away from that problem now he’s at Villa.

“We know how much Gerrard likes his wing-backs and Patterson could be ready to leave Rangers after his lack of game time.

“He will want to keep his place in the Scotland squad and as a young player, he won’t want to wait around for Tavernier to move on.

“It’s a deal I can see happening, maybe not in January but in the summer.

Everton

Rangers would demand a significant fee I would imagine.

“But Aston Villa certainly aren’t strapped for cash, are they?”
