Spanish goalkeeper Pau Lopez could already be saying goodbye to his time in North London just a year after joining the club.
The 22-year-old goalkeeper’s long-term future doesn’t appear to be at Tottenham after Peterborough United’s director of football Barry Fry has revealed that Tottenham are looking for a new goalkeeper.
Speaking with Peterborough Today, Fry discussed a conversation he had had with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levi over the potential transfer of Spurs goalkeeper Luke McGee.
“I want to sign Luke on a free transfer, but I would give Spurs a huge sell-on fee,” he said.
He later added: “It makes sense for us and I think it makes sense for Spurs as well as, good as Luke is, he is not near their first team and I understand they will be signing another goalkeeper soon anyway.”
This could be curtains for Lopez, currently on-loan from Espanyol, who has been the third choice keeper at White Hart Lane this season.
With both Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm recently signing long-term contracts at the club, Lopez’ opportunities of breaking into the first team in the future appear to be very slim.
The Spanish goalkeeper has only been named on the first-team substitutes’ bench when Vorm has been ruled out due to injury and he hasn’t started in the EFL Cup nor the FA Cup this season, which shows that he is currently being overlooked by Mauricio Pochettino.
His chances of playing have even been limited in the Under 23s where he’s only made seven appearances in the league this season.
Surely this is completely unacceptable for a goalkeeper who started 35 La Liga matches last season with Espanyol?
The young Spaniard will also feel that staying at the club will hinder his chances of playing on the international stage.
In order to try and break onto the international scene, Lopez will need to start playing every week at the top level.
The most important thing for a 22-year-old footballer is to get some minutes under his belt and with Tottenham reportedly looking for another goalkeeper, it doesn’t appear that he will receive the necessary game time at White Hart Lane.
In other Tottenham transfer news, the club have sensationally terminated the contract of one of their emerging stars.
