Paul Dummett posts Twitter verdict on last-gasp Newcastle victory v Brighton

By Will Butcher

Paul Dummett revealed his delight on Twitter after Newcastle secured an 89th-minute winner against Brighton on Tuesday night.

Newcastle leapfrogged their automatic promotion rivals Brighton with a 2-1 Championship win at the Amex Stadium, thanks to Ayoze Perez’ late winner against Chris Hughton’s Seagulls.

Wales international Dummett was in buoyant mood on his personal Twitter account, claiming there is “nothing better” than winning late on after substitute Perez broke Brighton hearts.

Brighton had taken the lead through Glenn Murray from the penalty spot, after Ireland international Ciaran Clark hauled down Murray during a corner.

The Seagulls’ target man converted the spot kick, and the scoreline remained at 1-0 to the home side until the 81st minute.

Midfielder Mohamed Diame scored with a flick of the outside of his right foot after Christian Atsu fluffed a chance to shoot. It remains to be seen whether the Senegal international intended on finding the top corner.

His equaliser swung the momentum into the Toon’s favour, which they capitalised on eight minutes later as Spaniard Perez converted Atsu’s low cross.

Dummett, who played the full 90 minutes, was delighted with Perez’ impact from the bench, which has seen the Magpies rise back to the top of the Championship table.

Now two points clear of Brighton, Rafa Benitez’s side will be hoping to build on their Brighton triumph this weekend but face a tough task against third-placed Huddersfield away from home.

A win against David Wagner’s side could see the north East outfit move five points clear, if Brighton lose to Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

In other Newcastle news, these three players were guilty of being the Toon’s worst performers on Tuesday night.
