Paul Merson think that Liverpool will never win the Champions League if Lorus Karius is the starting goal keeper.
Speaking on Sky Sports, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo, the former Arsenal man does not believe that the Reds possess the defensive quality that is required to win titles.
“Liverpool can’t win the Champions League in a month of Sundays, they just can’t defend,
“And you go through any champions, World Cup, Premier League, European Championships, European Cups, tell me a team that has won anything without a good, in-form goalkeeper?”
Karius won the starting job ahead of the goliath Premier League fixture versus Manchester City, and despite a few defensive errors, Liverpool won the game 4-3.
Yet, Merson believes that Karius was directly resposinble for Liverpool’s late leakage of goals, as they were 4-1 up with 7 minutes to go,
“That’s all down to the goalkeeper Loris Karius, he should have done much better with Leroy Sane’s shot. They’re just not good enough.”
However, the German under-21 international was the designated keeper to play the Champions League matches, so played a part in the Reds getting to the round of 16.
Liverpool will play Porto for a place in the quarter-finals, and their current spell of 18 games unbeaten will fill the players with confidence ahead of the first leg fixture.
