Paul Merson predicts Liverpool clash with West Brom, hails highly criticised player

By Amir Mir

Paul Merson believes Liverpool will record a 1-1 draw against West Brom on Sunday afternoon at the Hawthorns.

Sky Sports pundit Merson hailed goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, who has been highly criticised this season, for his performance against Stoke last time out.

Jurgen Klopp’s side came from 1-0 down to beat Stoke 2-1 away from home, largely thanks to the saves from their Belgian shot stopper.

In both halves, he stopped a number of clear cut chances from finding the back of the net as the Reds recorded a valuable three points.

Now, former Arsenal playmaker Merson believes they will drop points against Tony Pulis’ West Brom at the weekend.

“The Southampton result was disappointing [for West Brom] but I think they get something from Liverpool, who will be thinking they have to win,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“The Reds did very well to come back against Stoke and Simon Mignolet made some super saves but this is a tough one.”

Liverpool currently occupy a top-four spot but they are being chased by the Champions League chasing pack.

At this moment in time, the Merseyside club are third in the table on 63 points from their 32 matches, six points ahead of fifth-placed Manchester United, who have two games in hand.

Dropped points by Klopp’s team could see the likes of United or even out-of-form Arsenal catch them in the table.

One positive for the Reds is that they are the highest goalscorers in the division with 68 goals from their 32 matches.

However, they have also conceded the most goals from the teams that currently occupy the top six places in the table.
