Paul Merson believes Tottenham will suffer a defeat against Manchester City on Saturday evening at the Etihad Stadium.

The north London club are preparing to travel to Manchester to face Pep Guardiola’s fifth placed side.

The two teams are currently separated by three places and three points and Sky Sports pundit Merson believes it’s a must-win clash for the Manchester club if they are to make the top four.

The former Arsenal man has predicted a close encounter with City ultimately coming out as victors in a 2-1 victory, which will prove decisive.

“Everybody is telling me Tottenham can win the league but if Man City beat them then they are level on points with Mauricio Pochettino’s side,” Merson wrote in his Sky Sports column.

“It’s a must-win game for City. If Pep Guardiola can get a win I think his side are back to being top four material.

“If they lose though I think they can wave goodbye to the top four. Defeat would knock the stuffing out of them and I don’t think these players are up for a top four battle. It’s a big, big football match for City.

“For me, it’s cometh the hour cometh the man. Pep’s got to put a side out that will produce and win this match and I’m backing him to do it.”

Tottenham have won their last seven matches in all competitions, with six victories coming in the league.

Of those results includes a vital 2-0 win over Chelsea, which has helped move them within seven points of the Blues.

They will be eager to continue their impressive run as they look to mount a claim for the league title and they could look to profit from a weak City defence on Saturday.

The club suffered a devastating 4-0 defeat against Everton in their most recent fixture and the likes of Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Harry Kane will fancy their chances.
