Paul Merson predicts Tottenham v West Brom, hails this player

By Amir Mir

Paul Merson has backed Tottenham to beat West Brom 2-0 in their Premier League clash at White Hart Lane on Saturday afternoon.

Sky Sports pundit Merson also hailed midfielder Dele Alli for his performance against league leaders Chelsea prior to the FA Cup fixtures.

The England international netted two well-executed headed goals as Spurs ended their London rivals impressive 13 game winning run.

Now, Mauricio Pochettino’s side will turn their attention to Tony Pulis’ side as they aim to maintain their unbeaten run on home soil this season.

Ahead of the match, former Arsenal playmaker Merson provided his verdict on the encounter and the performance of Alli.

“Spurs are flying at the moment and playing well, but this was the game that pretty much lost them the league last year when they drew 1-1,” Merson wrote in his Sky Sports column.

“It will be a hard game but I expect Spurs to win. Dele Alli is in great form and I was very impressed with the way they beat Chelsea. Spurs had to win and they played well.

“West Brom could easily have got draws at Arsenal and Chelsea so it will be difficult for Spurs, but I think they will win.”

Former MK Dons player Alli has scored six goals in his last three games against the likes of Southampton, Watford and Chelsea.

He came off the bench last Sunday to help his team progress through to the next round of the FA Cup when they beat a stubborn Aston Villa side 2-0.

Pochettino’s side are third in the table on 42 points from 20 games, seven behind leaders Chelsea knowing they cannot afford to drop any points.

Additionally, they are a point ahead of north London rivals Arsenal who travel to league strugglers Swansea on the same day.

Dropped points against the Baggies could see Spurs move out of the top four and possibly, depending on results, go level on points with sixth-placed Manchester United.
