Paul Merson slams Newcastle senior duo after performance against Fulham

By Amir Mir

Paul Merson has slammed Newcastle senior duo Jonjo Shelvey and Matt Richie for their performance during the 3-1 home defeat against Fulham on Saturday afternoon.

Sky Sports pundit Merson stated that they “didn’t do anything” during the game as Rafa Benitez’ side dropped valuable points at St James’ Park.

The away team fully deserved the points after they outplayed their opponents with a magnificent attacking display.

The star of the show was 16-year-old Ryan Sessegnon with the full-back scoring a brace against the Championship leaders.

After the game, former Arsenal midfielder Merson was critical of the Magpies as he questioned their status in the league.

“You’re watching the game and if you didn’t know you would think, ‘how are they top of the league’,” Merson queried on Sky Sports after the game. “Their main players like Shelvey and Ritchie didn’t do anything. It wasn’t good.”

Following that defeat at home, the north east club remain top of the table, but only on goal difference with Brighton breathing down their neck.

Chris Hughton’s side beat Steve McClaren’s Derby County 3-0 on Friday night to go level with their rivals in the table.

However, Benitez’ side couldn’t open up a gap on the Seagulls with six points separating the top two and third-placed Huddersfield, who have a game in hand on their rivals.

Nine encounters remain in the season with the Magpies set to travel down to the Midlands on Saturday afternoon to take on struggling Birmingham City.

On the other hand, Brighton will travel to Yorkshire to take on promotion rivals Leeds at Elland Road in what is expected to be a thrilling encounter.
