Paul Mullin and Ben Foster react to as Wrexham announce significant new signing

Wrexham’s latest signing has sparked reaction from two former players ahead of the Championship season.

The Red Dragons have been flying high since stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mcelhenney took over the then non-league club in February 2021.

The Welsh club have achieved three successive promotions from the National League to the Championship thanks to their financial baking and smart recruitment.

Ambition is still high at the club, with the Premier League the aim for Reynolds and Mcelhenneny.

New number one for Wrexham

Taking to Instagram (1 July), Wrexham announced their second signing of the summer following the arrival of Ryan Hardie from Plymouth earlier in the window.

The post confirmed the arrival of goalkeeper Danny Ward with the caption: “Back where it all started,” with the player wrapped in a Welsh flag.

Ward came through the youth ranks at the club before departing in 2012 for Liverpool.

Former Wrexham stars Paul Mullin and Ben Foster both liked the post.

Mullin recently left the Racecourse to join League One side Wigan after 148 appearances for the club.

Goalkeeper Foster played a pivotal role in helping Wrexham achieve promotion to League Two back in 2023.

Wrexham make another statement of ambition

The arrival of Ward is another signal of Wrexham’s intent to not stand still and push for another promotion.

The 32-year-old brings experience of winning promotion to the Premier League after succeeding in the play-offs with Huddersfield in 2017.

Ward, who has earned 44 Welsh caps, though will have to fight for the number one jersey with Arthur Okonkwo who was impressive in-between the sticks last season.

The mentorship that Ward can give Okonkwo can only be beneficial for the 22-year-old.

Wrexham will face stiffer competition in the Championship, and there opening day trip to Southampton will be an early indicator as to whether they could be a threat to the Premier League’s relegated trio.

Phil Parkinson certainly wants to strengthen his squad and the departure of fan favourite Mullin was a clear message that anyone could be next to leave.

Parkinson has an incredible record of having won six previous promotions as a manager and he looks eager to earn number seven with Wrexham.
