BBC Pundit Tam McManus believes that Stuart Armstrong’s impending departure from Celtic could see the Hoops make their move for John McGinn.
Armstrong is set to join Southampton in a deal worth £7million, and McManus, as quoted on his personal Twitter account, has claimed that McGinn will surely move to the Hoops.
“Armstrong to Southampton paves the way surely for McGinn to the Tic?” he said.
The Hoops have been linked with McGinn earlier this summer, with the Scottish Sun claiming that he was on a shortlist of potential signings but as yet no bid has been made for the 23-year-old.
Football Insider verdict
Only time will tell if the departure of Stuart Armstrong leads to the Hoops making a move for John McGinn, as it had gone quiet on that potential deal for a few weeks. No doubt the rumour mill will swing back in action now though, as the Bhoys will possibly be looking for a new midfielder. It has to be said though, that McGinn would not be a like for like replacement for Armstrong, as he is far more defensive than the soon to be Southampton man. McGinn would also not replace the goals that Armstrong brought to the Hoops side when he was in good form, such as the 17 goals he scored in the Hoops’ treble winning season of 2016-17. There is no doubt that speculation will continue about McGinn until an interested party makes a move for the 23-year-old, but as yet there has been no indication that the Hoops will make that move, and the impending departure of Armstrong might not change that.
