Pep Guardiola shames Man United as Man City news emerges – expert

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has hailed Man City boss Pep Guardiola after he paid £10,000 bonuses to members of his staff.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – contrasted the City manager’s act with events at Man United, who have recently laid off 250 staff and reduced benefits for their continuing workforce.

As per the BBC (28 August), Guardiola has given a £10,000 bonus to each member of his first-team support staff.

It is claimed the total outlay, which came from the Spaniard’s own pocket, was around £500,000.

Man City won the Premier League for the fourth consecutive season in the 2023-24 campaign and have started strongly in their quest for a fifth straight title.

Guardiola has put Man United to shame with Man City staff bonuses, says Wyness

Wyness suggested the City boss has put Sir Jim Ratcliffe and United to shame as the contrasting fortunes of the two clubs continue.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It’s great to see this.

“It was done at this time of the year because you can’t give bonuses at any other time than the off-season.

“It has to be declared as such.

“It’s good from Guardiola, this is just his way of saying thank you for all the support he has been given.

“Everyone sees at City that there is big money flying around so it’s only right that the staff who do the work and get the results are rewarded.

“It’s claimed to be out of his pocket, which may well be the case – but perhaps the club itself can also give a bonus too.

“The staff have been outstanding and they’ve achieved great things.

“But at Man United, across the city, they’ve taken away the benefits enjoyed for many years and laid a huge number of staff off.

“It’s two different karmas playing out in Manchester at the moment.”
